For many of us, when a computer breaks down, panic ensues. But it does not have to be this way. By calmly following a set of steps, you can determine the best course of action toward fixing the issue, which will bring you that much closer to resolving it.
Basic Troubleshooting
You would be surprised by how many problems can be resolved by simply turning off and on your computer. If the computer is not reacting at all, this can usually be done by holding down the power button for a handful of seconds. Turn off all connected devices as well.
Once the computer is off, let it stay that way for a minute or so. This is a good time to get a drink. Then, turn your computer (and the connected devices) back on. If you are still having problems, check if another computer you have (or can borrow) is having the same issue. If only one computer is having the problem, that computer may need to be repaired. If both computers are having the same problem, it’s a probably a software or networking issue, which may also need some form of repair.
Is the Problem Hardware or Software?
Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether a problem is hardware or software related. But if the problem is only affecting one piece of software, there is probably something wrong with that piece of software. Conversely, if the computer will not start at all, or if a specific device is not functioning at all, you probably have a hardware issue.
Does Your Software Come with Support?
If you have determined that the problem is software related, the next thing you need to determine is if you can get support for it. Many common types of software, such as office productivity tools, have free technical support, either by telephone, or by email or chat. Check the manual that came with the product or the online help, or check out their website.
Does the Computer Have a Warranty?
If you have determined the issue is hardware related, the first thing you should check is if the hardware is still under warranty. Most new computer products come with warrantees, and if yours is still valid, the manufacturer may repair it free of charge.
If a piece of equipment is no longer under warranty, the manufacturer of the device may still provide technical support. If they do, it may be worth contacting them. They may be able to at least identify the issue and the steps needed to resolve it.
